A leased line is designed to provide reliable, dedicated internet connectivity for businesses. Unlike standard broadband, a leased line isn't shared with neighbouring properties, which means you should receive consistent performance throughout the day.

However, if your connection seems slower than expected, you may wonder how to test it properly. Many businesses search for information on how to test leased line speed or how to speed test lease line connections, only to receive inconsistent results because the tests aren't being carried out correctly.

Before assuming there's a fault with your service, it's important to understand how leased line speed testing works and how to obtain accurate results.

Why Leased Line Speed Tests Can Be Misleading

Many businesses run a quick online speed test from a laptop connected to office Wi-Fi and assume the result reflects the performance of the leased line itself.

In reality, several factors can affect the result before traffic even reaches the leased line. These include wireless interference, firewall performance, local network congestion, ageing equipment and other users consuming bandwidth at the same time.

This is why your provider may ask you to perform specific tests if you've reported slow speeds. They need to isolate the leased line from the rest of your network to determine whether the issue lies with the circuit itself or somewhere else within your IT environment.

Start By Confirming Your Expected Speed

Before carrying out any testing, make sure you know the speed of the service you've purchased. For example, you may have a 100Mbps, 500Mbps or 1Gbps leased line. However, it's important to understand that speed test results don't always match the headline speed exactly. Small variations are normal and don't necessarily indicate a fault.

If you're unsure about your contracted speed, check your service documentation or speak with your provider before carrying out any further testing.

Choose A Reliable Speed Test Service

When learning how to speed test leased line services accurately, the testing platform you choose matters.

Not all speed test websites perform equally well, particularly when testing high-capacity business circuits. Where possible, run tests against more than one server. This helps eliminate issues that may be related to the test server rather than your leased line.

Running multiple tests at different times can also provide a clearer picture of overall performance.

Test Directly From The Provider's Equipment

Ideally, your computer should connect directly to the Network Terminating Equipment (NTE) or the handoff device supplied by your provider.

This removes potential bottlenecks created by:

  • Firewalls
  • Routers
  • Internal switches
  • Wireless networks
  • Local network traffic

By connecting directly to the provider's equipment, you're testing the leased line itself rather than the wider office network.

Avoid Testing Over Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is often the biggest cause of misleading speed test results.

Wireless networks are affected by many factors, including distance from the access point, building materials, interference from nearby devices and the number of connected users. Even if your leased line is performing perfectly, Wi-Fi limitations can significantly reduce the speed end users experience.

If direct testing from the NTE isn't practical, use a wired Ethernet connection instead. A wired connection provides a far more reliable indication of actual network performance.

Test During Quiet Periods

Network usage within your organisation can influence speed test results.

If dozens of employees are downloading files, attending video meetings or using cloud applications, the available bandwidth will be shared across those activities.

For the most accurate results, carry out testing when network activity is low. Testing during quieter periods helps remove internal traffic as a variable and provides a clearer view of the leased line's performance.

Understanding Latency And Ping Results

Leased line speed isn't the only measurement that matters. Your provider may also ask you to provide ping results when investigating a connectivity issue.

A ping test measures how quickly data travels between your device and another destination on the network. Low ping times generally indicate a responsive connection, while higher figures may suggest congestion or routing issues.

For businesses using cloud applications, voice services and video conferencing, latency can be just as important as raw bandwidth. A connection with excellent speeds but poor latency may still create problems for users.

What Is A Traceroute Test?

You may also be asked to perform a traceroute. This shows the path data takes between your network and a destination on the internet. This information helps identify where delays may be occurring.

For example, a traceroute can reveal:

  • Routing issues
  • Packet loss
  • Congested network paths
  • Problems with upstream providers

Your provider may request traceroute results to their gateway, DNS servers or major public websites. While the results can look technical, they provide valuable information when diagnosing network performance issues.

When To Contact Your Provider

If you've completed the recommended tests and are still experiencing poor performance, it's time to contact your provider.

Most leased line providers can remotely analyse circuit performance, bandwidth utilisation, latency and recent activity on the connection. The more information you provide, the faster they can determine whether a fault exists and what action may be required.
