By [**Cedar Telecom**](https://www.cedartelecom.co.uk/blog/author/cedar-telecom) on Sep 27, 2018 ![What is Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)?](https://www.cedartelecom.co.uk/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/Business-Telecoms-and-Business-Internet-Insights-Jul-01-2026-02-28-50-0220-PM.jpg) Fibre to the Premises [(FTTP)](https://www.cedartelecom.co.uk/data/broadband) is a newer type of broadband which uses fibre optic cables to help increase the speed of your broadband connection. Fibre optic cables can transfer data quicker than the copper cables that other types of broadband use. Fibre to the Premises is often referred to as ‘super-fast broadband’ or ‘next-generation broadband’. This is because it offers faster speeds than have been available to date using alternative technologies. An existing fibre optic cable is in place between the BT exchange and your local street cabinet. Installation of Fibre to the Premises ([FTTP)](https://www.cedartelecom.co.uk/data/broadband) involves running a fibre optic cable between the local street cabinet and your premises. An engineer will need to run the fibre to your property and will normally be able to run it alongside your current lines either underground or over the existing poles. The fibre will then be terminated on the outside wall of your premises at ground level. On a separate appointment another engineer will return to run the fibre through the wall. They will install a box similar in size to a normal router, the fibre broadband will then be able to be used. FTTP is a much more stable and reliable broadband with speeds currently available anywhere from 40Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream up to 330Mbps downstream and 50Mbps upstream, dependent on what package you decide to choose. FTTP is currently in the process of being rolled out nationwide and dependant on where you are in the country will depend on whether you can get it installed at your premises. If FTTP is not available you may still be able to get [FTTC](https://www.cedartelecom.co.uk/data/broadband).
