FTTC

Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) is a type of broadband which uses fibre optic cables to help increase the speed of your broadband connection. Fiber optic cables are able to carry a lot more data than copper cables, especially over long distances. It is often referred to as ‘super-fast broadband’ or ‘next-generation broadband’ as it offers faster speeds than traditionally were available using previous technologies.

Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) involves running fibre optic cables from the telephone exchange to the street cabinets, that are normally within a few hundred metres of your property, which is where the name comes from. From the street cabinet it can either connect direct to your house or with a standard phone line.

SoGea FTTC is the name for Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) without an analogue line as part of the package. As part of BT’s upgrade plan all analogue lines will be removed by the end of 2025

Benefits

Faster

The download and upload speeds are faster than are available via traditional ADSL broadband

Stable

Fibre broadband is much more stable than traditional ADSL broadband

Hosting

It may be possible with the increased bandwidth to replace expensive software licenses with cloud based systems instead

Cost Effective

FTTC is an attractive alternative to an EFM or Leased line. Depending on your requirements you may be able to opt for FTTC and get the speed you need more cost effectively

IP address

As a business we automatically give you a Static IP address. So whether you want to do anything from accessing your systems remotely to running an FTP server the broadband is ready for it

Future Proof

The speed of the broadband is limited only by the exchange equipment and not by the fibre itself, making this technology future proof

FTTP

Business broadband for SMEs: understanding SOGEA and FTTP

Choosing the right business broadband solution is becoming increasingly important as UK businesses move away from the traditional copper telephone network. With older ADSL and FTTC services being phased out, most SMEs are now choosing between two main connectivity options: SOGEA and FTTP.

Understanding the differences can help ensure your business has the speed, reliability and support needed both today and in the future.

What is SOGEA business broadband?

SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) is a broadband service that uses fibre to the local street cabinet and existing copper cabling for the final connection to your premises. Unlike older broadband services, it does not require a traditional telephone line, helping businesses avoid unnecessary line rental costs.

Typical SOGEA speeds include downloads of up to 80Mbps and uploads of up to 20Mbps.

For smaller offices carrying out everyday tasks such as email, web browsing and light cloud usage, SOGEA can provide a cost-effective and reliable solution. Where FTTP is not yet available, businesses can also install multiple SOGEA connections to increase capacity, improve resilience and support additional users.

However, performance can be affected by the distance between your premises and the local street cabinet, and upload speeds may become a limitation for businesses that rely heavily on video conferencing, cloud applications or large file transfers.

What is FTTP Business Broadband?

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) is the latest generation of broadband, with fibre optic cabling running directly into your premises. This removes many of the limitations associated with copper-based services and delivers significantly faster, more reliable connectivity.

FTTP services can provide speeds ranging from 100Mbps to several gigabits per second, with some packages offering symmetrical upload and download speeds.

For businesses using cloud-based software, hosted VoIP phone systems, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and other data-intensive applications, FTTP delivers a noticeably better user experience with greater consistency and lower latency.

While full fibre coverage continues to expand across the UK, FTTP is not yet available everywhere. In these locations, SOGEA can provide an effective interim solution until full fibre becomes available.

Why business broadband support matters

When internet connectivity supports critical business operations, support can be just as important as speed. Unlike residential services, business broadband packages are designed specifically for commercial users and often include:

Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

Priority fault resolution

Faster response times

Dedicated business support teams

Proactive account management

These features can help minimise disruption and keep your business running smoothly if issues arise.

When To Consider A Leased Line

While SOGEA and FTTP provide excellent connectivity for most SMEs, some businesses need even higher levels of speed, reliability and resilience, or are based in areas where FTTP is not yet available.

An Ethernet leased line provides a dedicated connection exclusively for your business, with uncontended bandwidth and guaranteed speeds. Unlike shared broadband services, leased lines deliver consistent performance regardless of network demand.

Although leased lines involve a higher investment, they are often the preferred choice for businesses where downtime is not an option and internet connectivity is mission-critical.

At Cedar Telecom, we help businesses choose the most appropriate solution, whether that's SOGEA, FTTP or a dedicated leased line. Our team can assess your current and future requirements and recommend a connectivity solution that delivers the speed, reliability and support your business needs to thrive.

“We had Cedar as an ISP and VOIP provider until a few months ago. They have provided fast fibre broadband with no downtime for more than 6 consecutive years. We had a backup fibre line with them but we never had to use it. Their support was outstanding and always exceeded expectations. One of the best business broadband and VOIP providers in the UK.”

“I’m not a client of Cedar (yet) but I called for advice today. Got through to Robert who went out of his way to provide help and guidance despite not being a client. Exceptional customer service and very knowledgeable. If I wasn’t in a contract I would switch immediately but will certainly keep in mind at renewal time. Thank you for your help today Robert.”
